Another USA User!

Post by rollin hand »

I've been using commercial and consumer Windows products for twenty years; two weeks ago I tried Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon 64 bit on a "typical" Unetbootin install to USB, then learned how to resolve connect/disconnect issues, and the other day next learned how to use that USB install and GParted to turn another 32GB Sandisk Ultra into a persistent live USB install with 22.0GB free space after OS updates/app installs ( I didn't want to risk install to HDD on a five year old Acer Aspire laptop as I know if the slightest partition boundary error exists there without oem post-partition calibration, any OS will be clunky/slow...like the first few times I tried to get the native Win7 to install). I don't know yet how Mint works for business or gaming, but I can easily say anyone used to Windows would find that Mint is as extensible for everyday student and consumer uses as Windows or OSX; even complex 3d animations and compositings done in Blender on Mint are fluid! Hope Mint will grow in popularity and attract enterprise as well. Cheers!

Welcome to the Mint family forums

The idea that Bill Gates has appeared like a knight in shining armour to lead all customers out of a mire of technological chaos neatly ignores the fact that it was he who, by peddling second-rate technology, led them into it in the first place.

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to welcome me; I didn't know about your posts until I happened to be looking at LM forums tonight (some forums email when comments made, but I guess this one doesn't). Anyway, I'm really pleased with Linux Mint 17.1, as what I understand about upcoming Windows 10 is that it's overly fond of things like touch screen (and thus "congested/costly cloud for everything"), may start charging for constant updating, and is not yet clear about how much it will charge after "one year free"; as well, it might be good for me to know about a good Linux alternative for people I meet who still have good consumer devices but can't fully accommodate all of Win 10's dependencies. Again, thank you to all for letting me introduce myself.
