Another South African joins the forums....

Post by Nereus77 »

Hey guys, I'm Nereus77. I am a South African of English descent, kind of like that guy that started that other little Linux distro...

I am a Windows guy (since 1996) who has decided to install Linux Mint on his laptop simply because I do not appreciate the direction M$ has chosen to take Windows. I believe Windows 10 is both adware and spyware, which we can all agree is a BAD IDEA. I downloaded Linux Mint (64bit in Cinnamon flavour, mmm) last night and will install it on my laptop tomorrow! Yay me!

I am excited about the direction and momentum that Linux has in general. I have heard that Mint is about the best distro for people who are used to Windows to transition into the Linux realm, which is why I picked it as my successor to Windows 7.

Other notes:
> I plan on playing Star Citizen when it eventually releases. Yes, it will run on Linux natively at release.
> Vulkan. This API will revolutionize gaming on Linux, so I'm really amped that Star Citizen will be using it.
> I'm trying to learn programming. Trying.
> I work in software support and have found that I loathe Windows 8.1.
> I would like to build a new gaming PC (for Star Citizen, duh) and I would like to overclock it.
> South Africa sucks. Seriously, don't come here.

Welcome to the Mint family forums

wizard.
The idea that Bill Gates has appeared like a knight in shining armour to lead all customers out of a mire of technological chaos neatly ignores the fact that it was he who, by peddling second-rate technology, led them into it in the first place.

This is definitely a good distro to learn on. I tried more fringe distros but LinuxMint/Ubuntu are definitely the most comfortable.

Welcome to the family, and Happy Minting!

IMHO: if you're interested in learning programming, Python 3 is a good language to learn. Much of Mint is written in Python (although in the older-but-we-still-use-it-anyway Python 2; and translating between the two isn't difficult) and you can do all sorts of stuff with it, from designing games to writing tools to mathematical computation (my *specialty*, although I'm not very good yet.)

Have fun!

Welcome to the best Linux distro, Mint. :)
Left SA in '98 (Pta), did "penance" in USA, now in NZ. No place on earth is perfect or problem free, though the planet is blissfully unaware of how bad SA has become since 1994.
Where in SA are you?
