Wonderful To Be Here

Post by cruzsanta03 » Sun Aug 30, 2015 11:33 pm

Greetings,

Thank you to all of the veterans taking the time to help "newbies" become as expert as they desire.

As a user of Microsoft products and proprietary software for the last 15 years I agreed that "copying" a person's or companies software was "piracy." I bought into the idea that, "just because you own the software (SAAS is another thing) did not give you the right to "do stuff with the code, etc...."

I started a small freight brokerage just over 5 years ago; I recently sold it and am now an employee.

I changed my attitude about software when I actually needed to customize features to fit my need. After many "nickels and dimes" and being on the wrong end of the all-mighty programmer/sales/customer service "high priests" I stated looking around and found the GNU site and its philosophy, the description of how MIT folks shared and the eventual death of a wonderful community because of money changed my mind about "ownership."

I believe in making money in return for good work. Writing software is hard. What Microsoft does is hard; they have to write an OS that appeals to a hugely diverse user base.

But, the model is broken when I can't manipulate something that I supposedly own. "...I bought it and I want to get under the hood and modify the engine. Nope, sorry you may own the car but we own the information about the car and all modifications must go through us and of course there is a fee." My Father, if he had worked on cars, would have been outraged.

I am new, but always learning. I am always new to something and I never tire of good ideas by good people.

Welcome to the Mint Family forums

The idea that Bill Gates has appeared like a knight in shining armour to lead all customers out of a mire of technological chaos neatly ignores the fact that it was he who, by peddling second-rate technology, led them into it in the first place.
