My Introduction and seeking development package

Post by LDonegan »

Hello;
Name is Lucky D. I live upon the Flathead Indian Reservation in NW Montana USA. I have been repairing computers and installing Linux Mint then making them available for our Nations Veterans and Low income folks. I am wanting to get into development and help the Linux Mint community but have been having problems in finding a development package for programming within the Software Manager so far. I learned C++, Pascal, and Modula 2 in college really would love to program in Linux if possible. Just cannot find it so far. Have not given up hope yet still seeking such a package still to permit this desire of helping Linux Mint and the community at large.

Lucky

Welcome to Linux Mint, and the Mint forum. I would suggest going on Mint;s IRC channel and talking to the Dev's directly. I'm sure they could guide you.

Hi, Lucky, and welcome to the Mint forums. It's a great OS and I'm sure you will contribute to it. For the purposes you describe, you might check out Puppy Linux (heresy!) Even a dummy like me can customize and remaster a Puppy and then run it (with session saving) on a live DVD. That can let you get good use out of an old PII without a hard drive (really!) Mint is a top notch OS, but it loses effectiveness once machines get over a decade old. I guess it depends on what you have to work with and what needs must be met. I hope to see some of your work here. - Eric

Welcome aboard, LDonegan! Been playing any skiffle lately?

If you want to program on Linux Mint, you should install build-essential, gcc, and some code editors/IDEs. For Python, use Idle, for just about everything else, use Geany. There's also Gambas if you want to program in BASIC. And probably someone who knows more about it than I will pop in with more information.

Hi Lucky D and well come.
I have an application written in cpp and I'm looking for helpers who are willing to be a guinea pig and tell me what they have problems with. I hope I do not blow their system like I did mine once. I hope that I'm over that stage. You can take a peek at " https://github.com/stanley3384/DirectoryWatch " .
Just download it to somewhere like "Downloads/DiretoryWatch" click on it, then extract and read DirectoryWatch.odt for starters. Regards Ian

Hello LuckyD,
I live on the other side of the Missions, hope its not as smokey on your side.
You may be interested in a program I've experimented with a little called wxWidgets that can be used to create GUIs. Its not in the repo but I was able to compile it with the instructions found here.
