So long M$ Windows 10, hello Linux Mint

Post by essjam » Sun Jun 05, 2016 2:51 am

Hello Folks,
As someone else so aptly put it I am another refugee from the Windows 10 shenanigans. I dabbled with Linux many years ago, remember Mepis, but it wasn't serious. This time around I have had it with Microsoft and their damnable update tactics and spyware. I know there is a learning curve ahead but so far Linux Mint seems pretty intuitive. I am looking forward to the challenge.

I am pleased that Mint installed without qualms on this 7 year old laptop. Well done Mint!

Cheers
Scott

Welcome Scott.
Try to read as much as possible about Mint and how things work, either here in the forums, or the user guide which can be found here: https://linuxmint.com/documentation.php, or in the chatroom: http://widget00.mibbit.com/?settings=af ... oConnect=1
Google can help you with many things and if you still have a problem ask here in the forums. Please try to find the correct forum for your question.

I installed Linux Mint 17.3 (64 bit) with the Cinnamon desktop. I had done a bunch of reading on Google and the consensus was that it was the most similar to the Windows experience. I have been using Windows in one form or another for 25 years so I wanted the transition to be as comfortable as possible.

Ah yes, I'm using the 32-bits version of that. Nice, huh.
I made the switch in October and chose Mint + Cinnamon for similar reasons. Haven't booted back into Win7 since then, and I'm now afraid to do so, because I'll be hit with a LOT of updates... I may end up deleting it instead! :D

Welcome to Linux Mint! I'm kinda new, too, I've been using Mint 17.3 Cinnamon 64-bit for about 1.5 weeks now, and I've never booted into Windows ever since the day I installed it! Have fun in this liberated world.

A warm welcome and have fun with Linux Mint :-)

(btw. reading through some of the latest post in this section it looks like the release of W10 and general Microsoft approach to updating their OS is the best advertising campaign for linux...)

Thanks, looking forward to it. I am going to practice an get used to Mint on this old laptop. I have done the basic suggested configurations and will play with these for a bit. Nice experience so far.

I don't blame you..I've been reading the W10 thread under technology at Reddit and it just goes on and on...And on.
And yes, I do remember Mepis, very fondly in fact! :D I was distro hopping and I was serious!

I couldn't agree more. There are a lot of unhappy people that are up in arms about Microsoft's strong arm tactics. YouTube has a glut of videos either condemning M$, how to roll back to W7 or how to block the update. Microsux is shooting themselves in the foot on this one.

It just occurred to me that I am actually looking forward to one of those scam calls from "Windows Technical Support". That could be a lot of fun now. :)

How about every 2nd Tuesday of the month Windows "hi-jacks" your PC for Cumulative Updates !!! Enough of that waiting an hour to use my PC when I turn it on ! Been using Linux Mint 17.1 for the past year, still feel like a "newbie", but its getting better
