I'm the original Linux Pusher
Hi all,
Stars is a joint venture between my LUG and the United Way who supply their support and a place to do our work and meet.
I am the S.T.A.R.S. Coordinator at the United Way Bruce Grey and a member of the Bruce Grey Linux users group.
Stars stands for Supplying Technology to At Risk Students.
The Bruce-Grey Linux Users Group has refurbished 670 (Complete) computer systems for low-income families.
Stars will be using Linux Mint xfce again, I have tried many distributions but again have come full circle back to Linux Mint.
I have been a Linux Pusher since 2000 but because I am constantly converting new people to Linux I Must try hard to remain the perpetual Noob
I am the Original LinuxPusher there is another using my name and logo to Promote Linux (works for me)
We have even supplied Linux Computers to Disaster areas in Ontario after the Goderich Tornado and Slave Lake Fire.
We were considering Fort Mackenzie Alberta but unfortunately our supply is very low right now only 7 complete Linux systems are left in stock.
" STARS provides FREE Refurbished Computer Systems to Students from low income families.
We respect everyone’s privacy.
The computers are donated by local businesses and the public, then expertly tested & reconditioned by the Bruce Grey Linux Users Group.
STARS installs Linux, an Open Source ( free & legal ) Linux operating system which runs maintenance-free, has iron-clad security and comes with hundreds of installed applications including a complete office suite.
Easily save your work in Microsoft-compatible formats to open files at home & school.
Computers are distributed through the United Way Bruce Grey.
STARS GUIDELINES
1. Priority is given first to students of low income families (it is required to present proof of enrollment).
2. Supply is always limited, first come first served!
3. NOTE: If you decide to put another operating system on your computer, Microsoft Windows, Mac etc, due to the number of people waiting for a computer and the extended time it takes to fix, we will not repair it.
4. NOTE: Stars Only installs Linux Operating Systems. "
I Love Mint the herb and Linux Mint.

Re: I'm the original Linux Pusher
Welcome aboard, LinuxPusher! I also refurb computers with Linux and provide them to people who need them. But you've got a much bigger operation going than I have! I've just donated a couple of computers. Keep up the good work.

Re: I'm the original Linux Pusher
Hi all,
Thank you very much for the warm welcome.
Hope to be an asset here.
I was on the Development Team for Black Opal, Diamond IIB & Star Sapphire, as an advisor and tester.
I have a "few" different computers 11 last time I counted desktop and laptop I use for testing distributions.
Thanks again for the welcome.

Re: I'm the original Linux Pusher
Welcome LinuxPusher. In the last few months I have been spreading the word in the greater Portland Oregon area. I have been contributing computers for recycling and updates to Freegeek in Portland. I have bought 4 LM 17.3 Cinnamon 64 systems from them for my use and my 2 adult kids. I have also won over about 12 more associates to Linux. Freegeek has a policy of giving free computers to students as well as training students and under employed students, men, and women in rebuilding and refurbishing computers that are obsoleted by businesses or crashed from Win 10 updates and bugs.
I too am a proverbial Newby. Left over from the the Altairs, Sinclairs, Stars (Xerox), and Commodore 64's.

Hey welcome to the forum
Looks like your a Canadian eh
And helping out other Canadians , way to go.
A Canadian myself here.
If you know anywhere to drop off old notebooks or computers in the Trenton area (Ontario) or around here let me know, I can see if I can get others and maybe some other folks on board around here to help out.
I'll talk to our tech guy at work to see if we can donate used ones and few others if it's feasible for you.
Let me know.
Near Belleville area.

So far I see no LUG in your area but I posted the question to Ubuntu Canada mail list re "List all Canada Lugs"
You could start your own lug if none exists, easier than you think, sometimes I hang out in stores and wait for the opportunity to talk computers with other shoppers it usually turns to Linux easily.
You could start your own Linux Computers for Students program.
The best way to add credibility to your Linux Computers for students program is to get backing from a charity, church etc and they may even supply you a small space to do your good deed.
Then local business, YMCA (Police and Fire Persons may donate their personal computers) to your cause.
Volunteer somewhere it helps credibility and gives you the opportunity to hand out one pagers explaining your program.
Go to the local schools Make an appointment and talk to Guidance Counsellor, Vice Principal, Principal, take flyer.
Make one page flyers to post with permission, examples are below.

If you can inspect Motherboards for blown capacitors and burn marks, load Linux you are on your way to your own program.

EDIT: Does Not include all but a good start, Linux In Canada, http://www.bourque.com/linux.html
Re: I'm the original Linux Pusher
Nice thought but my age and very little free time I have (not much at all) is usually taken up with other projects I have going, so no go on starting my own, but if it's ever feasible for this area let me know I can talk to a few folks about it and see what can be done.I am looking.

What little time I do have for myself goes to the wife and then the other projects I have (to many projects going already as is).
