Hi - from Eastern PA USA,

Hi - from Eastern PA USA,

I finally decided to jump start my 'introduction' to Linux (after too many years of downloading various 'distros' -- but then not installing them :) ) -- by buying an old laptop (Dell) with Linux Mint 18/Sarah pre-installed (Ebay).

Now I have to figure out what I got myself into. At this point, all I know is the D620 boots into Mint 18 fine. My first task is to check the hardware specs -- terminal use? (To check what the seller 'really' included.) That is the limit of my Linux use.

I'm coming from the Windows world, with 4-5 working Windows XP systems (plus couple of Win 7 systems). (I refused to 'upgrade' to Windows 10, knowing that I wanted to spend that time and effort on Linux -- someday. Win10 is so different anyway).

I am an old EE, turned into a programmer (sort of) during last 10-15 years before retiring. So -- there is hope.

So, wish me luck. And I will be back here--lots !

Bill

welcome to the forum
:D

Do take the Time to Read the Mint Users Guide that came with the installation.

it's great that you got the old Dell working again.

type this into Terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
and copy the result, into a file,
so that you know, what the machine's hardware, is actually composed of.
- regardless of what the seller told you. . ..

Welcome, Billy

If you want even more detail than the above command, you can get a really detailed hardware list in a .html file by entering this command in the terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo lshw -html > hardware_list.html
When you execute the command, it will ask for your password - there will not be any dots or asterisks feedback as you type in the password.

The file hardware_list.html will be in your home folder.
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they ain't.

The idea that Bill Gates has appeared like a knight in shining armour to lead all customers out of a mire of technological chaos neatly ignores the fact that it was he who, by peddling second-rate technology, led them into it in the first place.
