Newly Divorced

Post by pondercat » Tue Sep 06, 2016 1:24 am

Hi all. Well I did it. I took the plunge and divorced Microsoft. I have been installing Linux Mint 18 (Cinnamon and now xfce on one) on all my computers over the last couple of weeks (my wife's as well) and can now use them to do EVERYTHING I ever relied on Microsoft for. Got some books on Linux and now trying to learn more about the command line. Looking forward to perusing the boards and learning as much as I can.
Linux is much easier than it was nearly 20 years ago. I did use it on a single computer in the late 90's or early 2000's, it was Red Hat 5.1 I believe. I had no GUI and only used it as a command line computer to process Project S.E.T.I. packets for about a year or so. The hardest part of that was learning how to partition the disk. I really did not take it any further than that then, but I am excited about it now!

We are a Microsoft free zone!!! I don't even need Office anymore. YIPPPPEEEEEEEE :D :D :D

I am so happy to be here!

Welcome from me too. The CLI (Terminal / Konsole) isn't really necesary for the most part but I love it as it is getting me back in to the "programming" spirit and I can do some things much faster in it than using the GUI. Like creating multiple directories and setting up the Bluetooth speakers, TV resolution etc.. It's a learning experience but well worth it.

I am also divorcing Microsoft. I just installed Mint 18 Mate on my new laptop machine and am totally Peed off that I was forced to pay Microsoft for the Windows 7 which was on the machine when I bought it.

Mint 18 KDE rocks! A few little issues with pasting files that end up 0 bytes long but otherwise a very nice OS. Windows 10... Never again!
