Lancastrian Geriatric Defects from Windows!

Post by Jaymess » Tue Sep 06, 2016 9:13 am

Howdo Everybody,
I'm new to Linux (and to forums), but I think(know) I'm going to need help, 'specially as I'm getting on a bit and not as sharp as I used to be! I'm here because four weeks ago I got a new W10 laptop, but after two weeks playing, I came to the conclusion that Windows 10 is nowt short o' Spyware! Not wishing to risk my new toy until I had a vague idea of what I'm doing, I installed Mint18 Cinnamon dual booting with W7 on my trusty old Acer laptop. I have a few issues which I'll put in relevant section, but so far, I like it!
I've been trawling this forum and others(lurking, is that the term?), for info, which gave me the confidence to reinstall Mint18 (to attempt to fix issues mentioned, but to no avail), I've even started copying & saving any terminal ( the little black screen thingy?) commands that look useful/relevant. I'm looking forward to getting to grips with Linux, at least it might stave off Alzheimer's for a while!
'oping' A'm dooin' this reet.....

lurking, is that the term?
lol , I have found that lurking sometimes is the Best way to learn something new. There are many members here that are Very knowlegeable, and are willing to help & share their knowledge. The Tutorials section here in the forums, and Mint's Community website are also great places to lurk. :-)

Welcome, and regards,
richy

Welcome from me too! Looks like you are on to a winner here :D I'm still a relative newbie to Linux in general but am more than happy to help if & where I can. The learning curve is just that ... and with a bit of enthusiasm is really not that difficult, as you seem to have found. Willingness to learn and adapt is the key here and it seems you already have that.

W10 is what pushed me over the edge, really, but I wish I'd explored the Linux option much earlier. Still, that brief experience with W10 (& W8.1) has kept me relatively up-to-date so I can still provide tech support when needed (it will be). If I'd jumped ship earlier I wouldn't be able to do that, so there is at least something positive in my case but I really could have done without all the stress over the years; my hair & beard is getting on for half-white now and I'm pretty sure the stress and frustration is a major contributor.

Happy that you and so many others have yanked the anchor and are now free to sail where you choose!
