Old Linux User

Post by jglen490 »

I've been using Linux for several years going back to RedHat (NOT Enterprise Linux) 5.2. I've been with Kubuntu for about 10 years, and not unhappy with it, but I thought I might check into other distros. I've heard lots of good things about Linuxmint on various other forums, so I thought I'd take a look. I'm waiting on delivery from OSDisc, from there I'll play with it as Live.

welcome to our forum.

do have a good play with the stick from OSDisc,
so that you can get familiar with just how the LinuxMint is working, these days.

then, later on, you can have a crack at installing the system, for real.

Welcome to the Mint family forums.

Most problems already have a fix

One of the common remarks from distro hoppers is that Mint is not cutting edge, some of the applications in the repositories will not be the absolute latest, this is by design so that Mint maintains a stability level that the average user wants, being an experienced Linux man if you want to risk stability for cutting edge then you can install the latest available versions yourself.

Thanks everyone for the welcome!

I recently picked up an older laptop (Toshiba Satellite A135). Right now I am using it as a backup machine and to experiment with other Linux installations. I had Lubuntu 16.04 on it for a while, after replacing the hard drive, but I installed Mint 18.2 Cinnamon on it yesterday.

The Mint install proceeded flawlessly. I simply kept the existing file system layout - / (20GB), /home (472GB), /swap (8GB). I reformatted root, but left /home and /swap as they were. The actual install went quickly, as did the follow on updates. Everything looks pretty familiar with the UI presentation - some differences from Kubuntu on my main desktop, but nothing outrageous or mysterious and functionally not at all unfamiliar. The few things I currently had on /home came through the install flawlessly - the only "confusion" came when I started Firefox. The config files from Lubuntu were still there on /home, so FF was briefly confused but no no long term injuries!

Again, thanks for the welcome and I hope to be of assistance here on the forum.
