Perhaps would it be time for me to introduce myself.

My name is Alain, living in Brittany, France (lived in Texas for more than 8 years, this explaining my profile's name "BZHTexas" BZH meaning "Bretagne Zone Heureuse (Brittany Happy Area)"!

Well, I wanted to migrate towards Linux for a long time and finally decided to switch to Linux Mint after windows causing so many troubles.

As an amateur astronomer, I would say that installing LM was a small step but a happy giant leap to the Linux planet (OK, let's say Universe). No way to come back to the other OS. NEVER!

I have a fairly expensive Canon photo printer. They do not provide Linux drivers anymore. So I boot into Windows to print the photos I've manipulated with the GiMP, from a shared drive. That's it!

"Celestia" is yet another open-source planetarium app, created by Chris Laurel. The app is based on Hipparcos Catalogue (HIP) and permits the users to travel through space.

Memories of those Windows issues will soon fade, stress levels will fall (actually that's true in my case) .. I'm sure you'll have a lot of pleasure with Mint.

I made the decision to switch the first time I booted a machine with Linux Mint, early 2016, never looked back. Windows is now confined to VMs for experimenting, with networking disabled.

BTW, I'm also into astronomy. Those suggestions by phd21 look interesting .. thanks phd for posting those.

Ouch. Would a VM work for this? My printer doesn't have an official Linux driver either, I'm using a Xerox driver. Maybe there is an alternative "compatible" one for yours, but I expect you've already looked/tried etc..

Hi phd21,

I know Stellarium and Celestia and had them installed on my other OS. Stellarium is one of the first softwares I installed on LM 18.2. There is another one I used: SkyChart/Cartes du Ciel. Stellarium is just perfect for my needs.

Hi Everyone,

FYI:
I do not know if anyone else has better instructions, but I found it difficult to find instructions for installing "celestia" in Linux Mint 18.x (Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial), whereas I think it is in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) for Linux Mint 17.x (Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty).

After extensive searching, I did find "celestia" in easy to install Linux ".deb" files for Linux Mint 18.x (Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial); download each file #1-#4 and then double click each one to install them in the order listed.
