Hello..... yes that's right, another newbe

Post by Wildbill »

 Hello to all. I am very new at this. I may need some help from time to time. I have installed Mint 18.2 Cinnamon 64 bit which I believe is known as "Sonia". I am using a rather old Dell desktop Pentium 4 3.0 GHz computer. I taught myself MS-DOS back before the Windows years (100 years or so ago) and have worked myself up through the numerous versions of said well through 7 anyway. To make a long story short it was suggested to me by a local computer dealer that I try Mint (no Windows 10 for me). Well that's about it.

Good for you. Windows 10 is a travesty on the computing world. Not only is it's "privacy" policy a lie, it's a huge privacy data collection system now for Microsoft. I help on windows forums too and Microsoft with it's mandatory update program along with it's turning so many installs into it's own webbot, to steal and use YOUR bandwidth to allow others to download updates direct from your computer, it also seems to have no limit on the number of connects at the same time to your new microsoft webbot enabled computer, which has slowed many users own internet speeds down. There is an option to turn that ability off, and I've seen where complaints about slow internet suddenly disappeared once that was done, but few even know they can turn it off. I had one person I helped by that being turned off, their "speccy" showed 497 remote connections and that dropped to under 40 after turning that webbot function off. It's hurt satellite connections which have limited monthly bandwidth tremendously, costing those users extra money, or loss of service till the next month's allowance. For them, it's truly a travesty of an OS.

Thanks to all for the welcome. Just as an update to all. I had been running "Sonia" in a dual boot setup w/Windows 7. After a little hunting around on the forum I decided to jump in all the way. Just finish reinstalling as a stand alone (on this machine anyway). I've still got enough questions to write a book but I'll just take them one at a time.
Thanks again for the warm welcome.
