New to Linux, Cheers! from Arizona

Post by peridot7 »

Count me among those who are (finally) ditching Windows!

I enjoyed BASIC programming (on a TRS80 Model IV, waaaaaay back in the day when we saved programs to cassette tapes!) and later became fairly proficient in MSDOS. I am a long-time fan of Apple Computers (anyone else miss the Happy Mac greeting?) and have used Windows since Win95 because it was necessary for work. Several years ago I worked for a company in the electronics field and a software engineer taught me some basic tasks on a UNIX system. This is my first venture into Linux, and I'm jazzed about it.

My background is in accounting and applied psych; I'm looking to shift into the world of IT, specifically data analysis.

Like many others, I'm quite concerned about online security and privacy and have implemented many steps in protecting myself and the people I know.

I've been researching different distros and learning the terminology of the Linux world for about a month. At this point I've successfully installed LM on an older Toshiba Satellite laptop (full replacement of Windows 7 and the Toshiba bloatware) and, with some assistance here, as a dual boot on two desktop machines (one with Win10 and the other running Win7). I think my SOs are surprised by my geeky glee when I share what I've learned and my small but meaningful-to-me accomplishments!

Current goals: find (and support) open-source replacements for Windows apps and learn Terminal commands, you know, for fun :D

Hi, peridot7. Welcome to the Linux Mint forums. :D

Glad to see somebody who used Windows computing for that long.

Good hunting Peridot7. I made the big switch nearly 2 years ago at a dead run. Since then I have converted over 175 machines to LM. For friends and aquaintences.
I am sure you will find numerous and many times better running equivalents to Windex programs in the "Software Manager" I am still finding new ones. Just when I am nearly ready to give up I find another one. Of course with nearly 85,000 to choose from It takes a while to sort out the best from the not quite as good.

Thank you much for the welcomes -- and the helpful links! I'm eager to delve into the new (to me) apps -- and already planning to install LM for my mom-in-law, once I've figured out everything she needs.

I'd pretty much given up on my 8-year-old Toshiba laptop . . . but after reading posts from users stating that Linux gave their older machines new life, I figured it was worth a try. Already so very glad I did, and appreciate that others take the time to post about their experiences, including the mistakes.

My next projects (after income taxes are filed) will be setting up a PC as a server -- and possibly converting a 10-year-old MacBook to Linux.
