Greetings! I am new to this forum but not entirely new to the Linux world. My line of work has me as an admin of a RHEL network of simulators that host classified software for the Army. Don't want to get too descriptive, so that's all I can tell you here! I also recently installed Linux Mint 18 on my college laptop, an HP Notebook. It went like most Mint installs go (i.e., ask me for user name, password, encrypt the home file, etc.), and I am able to log in and stuff, but I can't elevate to root via the command line. Tried su - and gave my password that I set up; su: Authentication Failure. I went thru the GUI and I am able to get elevated permissions there, but on a limited basis.
I sure could use some help to pull my head out of my butt on this one! Lol!

Re: Hello!
Perhaps because the root password is, by default, not set. See here for how to set it, if you want:dave1314 wrote: ⤴Mon Jun 18, 2018 12:58 pm I am able to log in and stuff, but I can't elevate to root via the command line. Oh, and welcome to the forum!
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they ain't.

Re: Hello!
Hello again everyone. I figured out my issue with the root password and, as stated by a member already, my root password was not set yet. I fixed that using the sudo root passwd command and set my password.
Have a great Monday everyone!
