My first/last journey into Linux over a decade ago had me frustrated and I felt resigned to being a windows user forever (and for a computing security, privacy and encryption enthusiast it has been a constant threat state feeling)...
This time around Linux experience is much different! mid April my 2yo laptop hdd began the 'click of death' and when considering Win10 OEM license issues installing to a new hard drive I thought to look again for "user-friendly" linux and Linux Mint was what I found recommended, everywhere(!) and user friendly it appeared both as an OS and with this responsive community I've been lurking since. So that dead hard drive turned into really good timing for me and end of April I installed LM18.3 cinnamon to a very old laptop (circa 2004 Panasonic cf-51 tuffbook, for WinXP, with 80g hdd, 2g ram and Intel Centrino chip;) as a test run and everything worked fine! When 19beta came out two weeks ago I fresh installed it and am really enjoying seeing this old laptop renewed with life! My modern laptop will go to LM19 once it's released (and I get a new hdd for it:)
Have also since *upgraded spouse's year old laptop to dual boot LM18.3 cinnamon with Win10 three weeks ago following guides and tutorials here or linked to from here, rebooted into Win10 once to verify good and she hasn't even considered going back since. The upgrade to 19 will be the big test for me in making sure her settings and preferences survive, however, she will truly appreciate the new update manager and timeshift features. The house desktop is also going to get upgrade when LM19 is released and will dual boot with Win7 (our music/movie/media server as well home to our backups).
Really enjoying this, have a couple issues to post, thought to say Hi from the Mile High (Denver, CO) first. Truly happy to have made the move to LinuxMint!
