...Zotep, sorry for being late in my reply - i simply didn't had any 'proper' solution in this case, hence i preferred to not make random suggestions.
Googling reveals many people who run with audio issues & bugs with this Asus model and the audio card in question in the past, but no specific workaround that would work 'as is'. And what's weirder, is that supposedly this behavior appears like it should have been fixed by Alsa & kernel updates quite a few yrs ago...

...two interesting things i've spotted out there, which you might wanna give them a shot:

Step-by-step: gksudo xed /etc/default/grub
Change the line there to read as: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="pci=use_crs quiet splash" , save, exit.
Then, in the terminal: sudo update-grub. Reboot.

2)Second one is in Spanish, he / she says that there was no audio emitted from the front panel,
and basically suggests to tweak the sound configuration in the BIOS...

I tried finding if there existed any parameters specific for your system that could be further specified set in alsa.conf,
but i wasn't able to really dig anything specific. :-/
Then again, i'm not an Alsa guru, so hopefully others can jump in & make further suggestions...

PS: Maybe this thread should be moved to "Sound, Multimedia, & Codecs" instead, in order to gain more visibility?

i also did not respond because your title didn't suggest to me there was a sound issue, there are too many sound issue threads and i forget which i respond to , you should change the title to reflect the problem

i see you have 2 hdmi outputs what are they? do you have something plugged into both? do you have pavucontrol installed? start a video or .mp3 let it play and open pavucontrol what do you have in these tabs? do you see any volume meters going up or down?

1) I did the change in grub and rebooted - no change
2) I agree that this should be "Sound, Multimedia, & Codecs" problem. I can't find it anymore but there was a thread under that topic started near the end of April that seemed related. I tried 2 or 3 of the solutions that worked for some people but didn't know enough about sound to be able to modify the setting to match my computer. The last thing that I did before my first post here was to uninstall and reinstall pulseaudio.
3) I installed pavucontrol and started a video: it shows 2 outputs, the top one shows activity, the second one says "unplugged"

Hi Zotep. Let's try this. Start something with sound like a youtube video, then in the terminal type pacmd list-sinks and paste the full output back here between code blocks.

Also, just so we're all on the same page, where exactly are you hoping/expecting to hear sound (speakers, headphones, monitor, tv, etc.) while we're testing this?

I'm guessing these speakers are plugged into the speaker or line-out port on the computer. Your list-sinks output shows only HDMI, yet your aplay output earlier also showed analog as available. I think (hope) you need to make a change in pavucontrol.

On the Configuration tab of pavucontrol you should have a few options. Click on the bars until you find one that hasAnalog (such as Analog Stereo Duplex) in it and select that. Now click on the other bar that probably has either HDMI/DP or VT1708B on it and change that one to Off.

Assuming all that goes as planned you might have to make a change on the Output Devices tab to either Speakers or Line-out.

I think I followed your directions for changing the Configuration tab in pavucontrol. I changed the first profile to "Analog Stereo Duplex (unplugged)", all choices except "Off" have (unplugged) in them. I then changed the second profile to "Off". I then went back to the Output Devices tab, which now contains "Line Out (unplugged)". I also clicked on "Lock channels together" and "Set as fallback". The other section no longer displays. I had sound on my Chrome Browser but not Firefox or a game that I frequently play.
I then rebooted. I now have sound for all 3 programs.
However, pavucontrol shows the "Lock channels together" and "Set as fallback" on the Output Devices tab options are reset.
I had assumed that I would need the "Lock channels together" because the game uses directional sound clues.
If this isn't true, then I would say at the first few checks, the sound is fixed.

You are welcome to change the title of the thread if still appropriate.
