I've been using GNU/Linux for nearly 25 years with it being my sole desktop OS for 20 years.
My usage history would be: Red Hat, Debian, Gentoo, Mandrake/Mandriva/Mageia, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, fedora and Linux Mint. These were all used for several years at a time not casual install then discards.
By trade I am an Electronics and Software Design Engineer and until 2000 I was heavily involved in Windows Application development. After switching to GNU/Linux as my desktop OS in 1998 I have been more involved in the technical side of GNU/Linux but I have a keen interest in cross-platform development tools like Lazarus.
My programming skills include Assembly language, C, C++, Pascal and more recently I've been learning Ada 2012 with a view to doing some ARM-based development in the area of 3D Printing hardware.
The recent transition to Linux Mint was fuelled by a desire to reduce the number of PCs in our household by building a new one for myself and my wife to share and to get her away from Windows 10 which has been a considerable annoyance to her since her machine was updated from Windows 7. Linux Mint ticks all the boxes in assisting her while providing a platform for me that "just works" which is satisfying my wish to not tinker as much as I used to.
