New to Linux Mint, but not to Linux...

Post by bassplayer »

Hello all!

Switched to Linux Mint from Slackware recently and just love how I can actually do work and not have to spend the majority of my time maintaining the operating system. :) I still maintain a few slackbuilds, but would like to look into contributing here.

Glad to be hear and been using Unix/Linux since 1995.

Welcome aboard, bassplayer! Mint is for people who don't want to be computer geeks. I am an electronic engineer, have written software, and can be as geeky as the next guy, but most of the time, I just want to use my computer for "normal" things. And Mint lets me do that. I haven't played for a while, but I play guitar, bass, and mandolin.

If you want to spend all of your time working, and not fooling with the OS,
install a crontab job and let it take care of everything in the background.

Code: Select all

# email to the user the crontab file belongs to (unless redirected).
#
# For example, you can run a backup of all your user accounts
# at 5 a.m every week with:
# 0 5 * * 1 tar -zcf /var/backups/home.tgz /home/
#
# For more information see the manual pages of crontab(5) and cron(8)
#
# m h dom mon dow command

 PATH="/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/sbin"

 0 12 * * * cat /home/john/add-line >> /home/john/mintupdatetoolcron.log

 1 12 * * * date >> /home/john/mintupdatetoolcron.log

 2 12 * * * mintupdate-tool -r -l 1234 -y -s -nk upgrade >> /home/john/mintupdatetoolcron.log

 0 18 * * * date >> /home/john/fstrim.log

 5 18 * * * sudo fstrim -a -v >> /home/john/fstrim.log

replace 'john' with your login name
the -nk means do not install the kernel......

the kernels break my WiFi so I monitor that manually.

Thanks everyone! :) Yeah, you can say that I'm on a twelve year sabbatical from playing. Wow, has it been that long already? lol :) Before going on sabbatical, I was playing for about 25 years with 15 or so professionally. Glad to see other musicians on here as well!!

Glad to be here!
