New to Linux Mint or any form of Linux

Post by Jackflash »

Hello Mint World
By way of introduction;
My user name id Jackflash
I am 64+
I live in New South Wales, Australia (soon to be moving to Queensland, Aust upon final retirement next year)
I have almost no Linux experience but have messed around with Rapberry Pi albeit not successfully so I know enough to be dangerous.
I am running Mint 18.3 and 19 xfce off CDs at present to see which one works best on my older machine (about 10 years old), leaning toward 18.3 because I like the look of it.
I have 2 older computers (one 15 years with XP loaded because I have Win programs that will not run on Linux) that I hopefully can get to network together (that is the first aim).
Please be patient with me when I ask the inevitable stupid/dumb questions and do not follow/understand the answers I am willing to learn but it does take time.

Hi Jackflash. If everybody retires to Queensland, there is going to be plenty of room elsewhere in OZ! :D What part are you heading to?

Bundaberg

I have started a thread in Newbie Questions called "Connecting to a Win XP machine via Ethernet".
I have tried to follow tutorial about networking and have just copied and am using Mint 18.3 Cinnamon but cannot get samba to install is there a known issue or am I doing something wrong?

I've not been to Bundaberg. I have a Brother in Cairns. Nephew in Airle Beach, Daughter in BrisVegas, and friends all up and down the coast, so can appreciate the call of the Banana Republic.

As for networking with Windwoes, been there, done that, but I cannot offer any solutions as I am very much a newbie to Linux, too.
