Hello! How can I help? [Solved]

Post by scottyawesomesauce88 »

My name is Scott. I am using LMDE as my main OS. I love it and want to help. I have very little programing experience (game maker/rpg maker  ) and would I'm start school soon for software design. I learn by experience and jumping in would be an awesome experience. Please let me know of any projects that are good for a beginner.

Welcome to the Linux Mint forums.

I'd say pick a project that aligns with your programming interests. Cinnamon applets are written in JavaScript, Cinnamon itself in C. The Mint tools (Update Manager, Software Manager, and so on) are written in Python. The Xapps (xed text editor, xviewer image viewer, and so on) are written in C.

You could consider writing an applet for Cinnamon, or looking at the issues open for other applets and whether you can do a bugfix for one of those. You can find information about contributing workflow here https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon-spices-applets. You'll find the link to open issues on that page as well.

Cinnamon has a lot of open issues https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues. You might see if you can help with triaging (can the issue be reproduced and does it have enough information for a developer to work on; see our troubleshooting guide for details on what makes a good issue https://linuxmint-troubleshooting-guide ... en/latest/). Or if you want to get into C programming see if you can fix issues. The same goes for Nemo, Cinnamon's file manager, here https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo/issues. Or if you'd like to get into C programming but want a bit smaller project consider Xed https://github.com/linuxmint/xed/issues or the other Xapps.

Python may be easier to get started with if all the above programming languages would be new to you. Projects like Update Manager https://github.com/linuxmint/mintupdate/issues can always use help.

There's a roadmap of things that are being/will be worked on here https://github.com/linuxmint/Roadmap but helping with triaging or fixing bugs is always useful.

You can browse all Linux Mint projects here https://github.com/linuxmint and you'll note it says underneath each what the primary programming language is. There's information for developers here http://projects.linuxmint.com/ though it's dated general info is still useful. A new contributor guide is being worked on but not ready yet.

Hello Scott Image

Welcome to Linux Mint and the Linux Mint forum :)

One way to help is if you know the answer to a poster's issue don't keep it to yourself

Good luck with your software design endeavors.
