Another Swede to join the ranks

Post by vultureen » Tue Jan 01, 2019 7:57 am

Hello all and Happy New Year!

(I really like the color scheme on this forum. Makes me feel relaxed and welcomed.)

About me: I'm a 46-year-old GIS Engineer trying to fend off new technology to the best of my abilities (I would rather be a carpenter building log-houses), but computers are everywhere, in one form or another, so what can one do?

I started with a used (and seldom used) Sinclair Z80 around 1983, quickly went on to the Commodore 64, some Atari ST after that, was amazed with the Macintosh and used it for a long while, built my first PC around 1997, went through every OS from DOS, OS/2, BeOS to Windows 10 (Windows pre-95 where the ugliest of them all). And now I actually think I'll stick to Linux Mint for the foreseeable future...

I've had this Linux-itch for some time, and three days ago I searched the web for a suitable distro. Linux Mint 19 looked very polished and stylish - I instinctively liked it the first time I saw it. I installed it along my Windows 10, and wow! I'm hooked!

Twenty years ago I did about the same thing - then with Suse Linux and Red Hat, and while the OS worked perfectly fine, there were not many applications that were useful for me (mainly games), and it was always a wrestling match to get the system to perform like I wanted.

But now with Linux MInt, it finally seems like a finished, beautiful, sturdy OS. With Steam, Spotify, Telegram, LibreOffice, QGIS, Unity3D (beta) and tons of other useful applications. I LOVE IT! And I only had to do minor "wrestling" three times with stuff that didn't work out of the box, and none of them where really related to OS stability:

1. Dual boot gave me issues, or rather it booted right to Windows. Fixed.
2. Game: The Long Dark had rendering issues with my Nvidia 1050 Ti-card. Fixed with a modified start script: -force-glcore42 -force-clamped
3. Game: Minecraft wouldn't work from mintinstall (old version?). Fixed when downloaded directly from Mojang.

A laughable short list of obstacles. I'm truly impressed.

Hi vultureen, your computer story is not unlike my own, only the only time I ever used a bit of fruit was when it was forced upon me at work. (the laugh was, I was selling IBM computers and had a macintosh (LCII) on my desk. (We were owned by an Apple Centre).
Kernel: 4.15.0-46-generic x86_64 bits
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.8.9
Distro: Linux Mint 19 Tara

Laptop HP-ProBook-470-G2 8Gb RAM SSD
Server AMD Phenom 9650 - GEForce 9400GT 6Gb RAM
+ three other Mint machines
Out of my mind - please leave a message
