..... I decided to give an old laptop new life by installing mint 19.1, I think. Not much idea what I am doing but loads of help reading old posts has helped. So far, so good, will need more help too, GGH

Welcome! A piece of old wisdom: when in doubt or feeling unsure what to do while tweaking your system, trust the defaults. They should be, and generally are, reasonable and sensible. :wink:
