Hi,
I've recently been given an old HP 530 laptop. Although it is old, it actually looks awfully new with not a scratch or mark on it. After a bit of a struggle it is up and running using Mint 19.2
Now, it works but I'm seriously thinking of upgrading the memory to 2Gb.

I've had some past experience of Ubuntu but became a sort of lapsed Linux user. I've a feeling though that this might be the way forwards for me now.

Quick question. Is there a way to change the screen on my laptop. Mine looks a bit washed out, as though the contrast needs adjusting....or am I expecting too much from this machine?

Hi Phil,

I'm not at my linux machine so working from memory .............. look up xgamma, it may be in the repository.
It is terminal command like:
xgamma -gamma 0.7 (where the latter value can be < or > 1)
or,
xgamma -rgamma (for red)
xgamma -ggamma (for green)
xgamma -bgamma (for blue)

Again relying on memory, I think the defaults are all 1.

It can be automated with a script as a startup program. Works a treat to brighten my washed out screen!

Which part of Wales are you from? I've visited Wales a couple of times on past visits to the UK and the one thing I remember the most are the fabulously long place names that are totally unpronounceable to me!

There is a little railway line called The Heart of Wales line that runs from Swansea right through the middle of Wales.
It is a joy to stand on the station platform as they announce the train....about thirty stations all with the sort of names that you mention.....most starting with Llan. It is like listening to poetry.

I've been to Cardiff once, just for a day trip while we were staying with family in Gloucester. We visited Cardiff Castle (I really enjoy visiting castles when I'm in the UK) and a Dr Who exhibition that was on there. I've also been to north Wales where we visited Conwy and Caernarfon (more castles!) I love the Welsh accent.

I would max out the system memory (ram) to whatever it can take and if it does not have an SSDrive get one of those as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.
