Hello from Milwaukee
Hello from Milwaukee
Hi everyone. Newbie here. I've dabbled a few times with linux using using oracle drop box on a windows desktop. I was never very pleased with it, as it always seemed so slow and unresponsive. I finally took the plunge. I purchased an inexpensive acer laptop from amazon, bumped the memory up to 12gb and installed a 500gb solid state drive and yesterday, 6-Feb-2019, I intalled linux mint 19.1. What a difference having a dedicated machine. No sluggishness here at all. I have a few issues and questions. I am sure I will be posting on the forum. I'm retired now, so I have the time to play some and more likely learn some. I'm kind of amazed. Outside of the printer issues, which I posted about last night, the install was seamless. Everything seems to work (except my printer). Again, a big hello to everyone.

Welcome ejpaulich!
I hope you find your early Linux days as entertaining as I have. I've just checked my local library's website and they have several Linux books so I'll be popping down there to check them out.

Welcome ejpaulich, LInux has certainly matured over the last few years, now, most things just work. Of course there is the odd item than is problematic. Not unlike Windwoes in that respect. However, once you fix something in Linux it stays fixed. Enjoy your new found freedom.

Hi and welcome ejpaulich! You may be able to use CUPS for printing with your printer. I think by default Mint comes installed with CUPS. If you need help using CUPS there are several tutorials online on YouTube and there may be some here in the forums. Also CUPS has instructions on their website. Not all printers are Linux compatible but its worth it to look on the printer website to see if they have drivers for Linux. Even if they don't CUPS should work. Hope that helps. Good luck!
Enjoy being and make the most of this life because you never know when you will breathe your last breath!
