Hello to everyone

Just joined here and thought I would say hello.
Got my first computer in 98, think it was running windows 5 can't be sure. I was clueless back then, but could manage to make things work at least. Through the years I'd stuck with what was familiar............windows. XP, vista, 7, and 8. My skills grew and I managed everything I needed to do, which isn't much online.

The current computer I'm on has 8 and I like it fine, but it's getting old, so I wanted to get a new one so last month I did, and the only OS offered was of course was 10 or Mac. I'd heard the horror stories about 10 and the updates, but thought it was manageable. It wasn't. Found out the first week of using it that there where no way to turn off the updates. It took me three days to get rid of Cortana. The bloatware was God awful Looked into Linux was unsure if I could make the adjustment. 17 years is a long time to only have one OS. One thing was sure WINDOWS 10 HAD TO GO!

Long story short, I called a tech guy that has a computer repair store to see if he could install 8 on the new laptop and he said he could. Took it in today and he called me this afternoon to inform me that with this new laptop, because it is so new, there is no way 10 is going to let him put an older version on it. How insane is that? Windows 10 has now installed security features that will not let older versions to be installed on it. Thought I owned the machine, MS doesn't think I do.

My only option that made since was Linux, tech guy said to go with Mint, and that he would have no problem installing it, so come Monday or Tuesday, I'm going to officially be the dumbest member here. Don't get me wrong I have watched a lot of videos and have a general idea about this, it's just so much of the terminology is different. Just hoping MS will allow the new computer to have Linux. If not it's going through the nearest power hammer.
Please bear with in the coming week or so with stupid questions.
K

I have to be the dumbest Linux user - running it for almost 15 years now and still learning

So please don't take that title from me

Hi Kamie, if you are familiar with the Windwoes way of doing things, you'll be pleasantly surprised with Mint, regardless of Desktop Environment (the interface that you use - Couldn't do that in windows) you will find much that is familiar. Of course there will be things to learn, but it ain't as bad as you think. You'll soon be so "converted" you'll wonder why you waited so long.

Hello kamie and welcome to the forum! :)

All of us were newbies at one time and managed to learn the world of Linux. I am sure that you will learn also. Sometimes the learning curve is difficult, but don't give up.
