New and very happy user

Hello all.

I am a brand new user of mint and am really getting to grips with it.
I have a fairly elderly Toshiba Satellite laptop which was running Win. Vista (!!!). Not really an option to upgrade to a later Windows version, and so I started looking at other options.
I installed Linux Mint 19.1 Mate (32 bit) and everything runs like a dream. I use the laptop as a second machine for internet (Firefox) with Gmail as my email provider. This worked 'out of the box' - well pleased.
I also use VLC to play videos and music- again no hassle.
Libre Office works well with my existing MS word docs.
I plugged in my OnePlus3 phone and file transfers worked straight away.

What more can I say. I have been a Windows user for twenty years but I am converted. Once I have played around with mint a bit more, I will likely change over from Win10 to Mint on my Dell desktop PC.

Keep up the good work everyone
Well done all involved.

Jukebox Mike

Hi jukeboxmike,

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

Frequently, new users have installed a 32-bit Linux Mint system when in fact their computer is actually a 64-bit computer usually because they had a MS Windows 32-bit system previously installed, the results of the commands will tell us that. You can also run "lscpu" and if it shows both 32-bit and 64-bit, then your computer is a 64-bit computer. If your computer is 64-bit, you should install a 64-bit Linux Mint right away.

Hope this helps ...

Hi mike, I'm pleased with your success. As phd21 has requested, whenever you do need to ask for help it will be wise to post the outputs of those commands as part of your help request. The other members here are extremely knowledgeable and helpful, as I have found, many times. Enjoy your newfound freedom.

FWIW I could never convince my wife to use a computer until I loaded Linux onto one of my spare machines, she is still very much a point and click, but I see her happily watching some video or movie on "her" laptop on occasion.
