First Linux laptop

Post by Minux1 » Tue Aug 06, 2019 2:19 am

Just salvaged a really pretty sapphire blue Acer Aspire One AOA 150 from being a paperweight.
It has a N270 ATOM processor, 160 GB HDD and I beefed the RAM from the factory 1GB to the design max of 1.5 GB (not an easy job - you have to strip the machine to basic parts). I installed Linux Mint XFCE 19.1 32 bit and it runs fine. It does everything it did when it ran XP SP3 with the same proficiency. With the same machine without the RAM upgrade I would have went with LM XFCE 18.1. 19.1 will be supported til 2023 and 18.1 til 2021.

Welcome aboard, Minux1! I suspect there are millions of old computers gathering dust in a closet that could have been given a new lease on life by installing Linux. Often when I install Mint on an old Windwoes computer for somebody, they say, "Wow, this is faster than it ever was, even when it was new!"

Thanx.
Tried Win 10 on the old Acer.
It installed but it was slow motion like molasses in January.
Perhaps the Win 10 would have been OK installed on a newly transplanted SDD rather than the factory HDD.
The Linux Mint 19.1 XFTC 32 bit runs fine.
Not super fast but quite satisfactory for email & web surfing.
Will even handle youtube.
