New Old Newbie

Post by ktb000 » Tue Aug 06, 2019 2:55 am

Hi Folks,

I'm an old time dos/windows user. Back in the day I played around with suse linux in the early 90s.

Later I switched to Macosx at home, but still working on windows on work.
After my imac died a couple of months ago i repurposed an acer laptop I got from my daughter with windows 10 on it.
I increasingly got more and more frustrated with it, and started to look at other possibilities and came across linux mint.

I had a look at it on a VM and was amazed.... My word I did not realize how far linux has come.... The freedom.... Especially Linux Mint.
Very Very impressed with this distribution...

Last week i switched over and installed the Beta release of Tina.
Absolutely love it. When the final came on friday the upgrade was very simple.

But as a new newbie I have a few questions:

- What are recommended sites for new linux users like me (especially when searching for new apps )

- How do I find a solution for a problem I have. I researched this forum, cannot find it, but I do not want to flood the forum with newbie questions I could find out for myself.

Thanks to you all, especially the Mint team and looking forward to participate in the community,

K.

Hello ktb000,
Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and it's great forums. You'll find answers to most of your questions right here.
As for apps. I would suggest that you first search the Mint repositories, as they have been tested to some degree and will work without breaking your system.
you can use Software Manager or synpatic package manager for that purpose. Most windows and Mac apps have a Linux equivalent.
Also Read the Mint users guide. There are many free web pages designed to help linux newbie's learn the system.
In any event Enjoy the process and you'll be answering other's questions before you know it.
