Hello World

Post by Scorp6 » Mon Oct 07, 2019 2:34 am

Hello everyone. I am a computer/network security major (although my college degree is a long time coming) and have dabbled in Linux for my classes and also have some experience in Java. I have a 64GB flash drive that I am trying to install Linux Mint on with persistence (or full install) but that's for another post.

I am looking forward to learning more about the Linux OS and so far from a few live-boot ISO's I've done on my flash drive (Kali, Linux Minut), the difference over Windows is impressive. Everything just runs so much smoother and just the feel and responsiveness of the operating systems is enough to make me want to at least consider the idea of making the jump full time. The community is also appealing and have found a mountain of helpful information on the different forums.

Here's to learning more.

Well after fighting with figuring out a Live USB with persistence using Linux Mint, I decied to just set up dual-boot since I had the extra hard drive space. I shrunk my C: to give myself 160GB of unallocated space and off I was. Special shout out to Pierre and his guide (viewtopic.php?f=42&t=163126). I was relieved to find that I didn't need to worry about /swap partitions and the like. Once I was live booted via USB, the Linux Installer tool was seamless. I did have a minor heart attack when it began installing before asking me which partition to use. Luckily the developers are smart and it automatically downloaded to the unallocated space and resulted in no negative effects on my Windows 10 and it's data.

First impressions are amazing. I have a cheap laptop purchased from Wal-Mart. I dual-booted 19.2 Xfce on the machine. I know that Linux Mint is considered a 'heavy' Linux Distro but wow, the results are impressive. Fast boot, flawless operation, very user friendly and that new-car feeling. I am excited to learn more and am currently searching for a book or guide that I can use to play around in the OS and learn some more. I'm very interested in learning as much as I can about the command line and do as much as I can in the terminal.

I look forward to all the help I will undoubtedly receive from the community. Thanks in advance!
