Introduction (to Linux)

Post by khaki45 »

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share my story of how I came to start using Linux and Linux Mint. I had heard brief mentions of Linux throughout my life, but I had always thought it was something only tech wizards were capable of using and so I never looked into it. However, due to Googles increasing privacy invasions and control of the internet, I wanted to find a way to ween my way off Google apps, so I looked into something called F-Droid. My introduction to F-Droid put Linux further in my mind, as I understand it has a connection to Linux.

Come summer of 2019, I had an old laptop computer that I was annoyed no longer worked. It had Windows Vista on it, and none of its browsers were updatable anymore. I wanted to find a to make it useable, and so I researched, and Linux got into my mind once again, and specifically Ubuntu. I realized it was a free, and constantly updating OS. After attempting to try it on Virtualbox, I took the plunge and erased Vista, and installed Ubuntu 16 (32 bit). While I was amazed by how different it was from Windows, the DVD player not working properly due to codec issues. This frustrated me, and research further, I heard rave reviews about Linux Mint. After sometime, I realized I was not happy, and erased Ubuntu and installed Linux Mint, and my old computer worked flawlessly after that, and Linux Mint earned my loyalty and trust after that :D I was so happy with Linux Mint, I bought a refurbished business laptop just to install Linux Mint on it and i've used it well for my schoolwork.

I made sure to install a 1TB hard-drive afterwards and this was useful for creating virtual machines of different Linux distros. And while I love to experiment with other Distros, (I've even managed to install Arch on Virtualbox) I have no reason to distrohop when Linux Mint serves my needs so well.

I too have test driven several Linux distros, including Arch.

Many of them are wonderful distros but for that little something, I gravitated towards Mint.

Welcome!
