New to Linux

Post by gdaddy »

Hello,
gdaddy here. I am new to Linux as I am trying to save my old Sony Vaio with only 1 gb Ram.
I put Linux Mint cinnamon 19.3 / Tricia on it but it is slow. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to (if possible) speed it up.
Maybe a "lighter" version?
Thanks, gdaddy

Welcome to the Linux Mint community. :D

With just 1GiB of sc memory it would imply an entry level computer. The Cinnamon destktop environment is consider a heavy weight DE. You might need to condiser an alternative. However, It would be helpful if you supply more specific information about your hardware.
Please post the output from the following command:

Code: Select all

inxi -b
When you post the output in your reply use the </> button and insert your output between the
and
tokens.

Cinnamon wouldn't be the best choice for that. :) I'd recommend LM 19.3 Xfce (supported until April 2023), or LM 18.3 Xfce (supported until April 2021).

Follow that up with these speed tweaks from the Easy Linux Tips Project.

Hi gdaddy,
welcome to our forum.
:)

with your use of that rather older machine, you may be better off in using this Linux System:
https://antixlinux.com/
antiX is a fast, lightweight and easy to install systemd-free linux live CD distribution based on Debian Stable for Intel-AMD x86 compatible systems.
& antiX offers users the "antiX Magic" in an environment suitable for old and new computers.
