New to the forum sorta kinda
Sort of new to the forums (I've posted once or twice since 2016-ish, not new to Linux Mint- been running it since I think 17.1 maybe. I had inherited a very cheap little Walmart Emachine that is really super slow, and finally ditched Windows in an attempt to make it usable. Chose Mint since it was touted as really easy for coming off the Windows plantation- used Mint ever since. Still have Windows 10 dual-boot on two of the machines in my sig, but I don't use it much- 99% of the time I'm booting to Mint. I've fiddled with a few other distros, but always go back to Mint Cinnamon.
Still just a casual user- I don't get into the nuts and bolts any more than I have to, but there's so much help out there online that I hadn't really got myself into anything I couldn't get out of. Anyway, I have most everything backed up to the wazoo, so I've never been shy about just wiping a disk and reinstalling on a whim. Not the end of the world.
I never care to go back to Windows as a daily driver.

Hi RickyRaccoon,
welcome back !
most of us have found this LinuxMint System to be some-what easier than that Windows System.

Hi RickyRaccoon!
You've had an account here for a long time! Even longer than I was a lurker!

3 steps to find an answer: (1) Search forum with unique key words. (2) Search with Google and add
site:linuxmint.com
to your unique key word query. (3) Search with Google and add either Linux Mint
or Ubuntu
to your unique key word query.- RickyRaccoon

Welcome to the forum Ricky!
Glad you got that Walmart machine usable.
I had an old HP Stream laptop once, Pink
(it was a gift from an ex
). Anyway it was one of those Walmart specials with an onboard SD card for storage so....what 32GB of storage
.
I did the same thing as you and was able to get it going and it was super usable after that.
Welcome again!

Thank you, thank you.
And that Walmart machine is... slow no matter what. It's not the one I'm using- it's like a backup in case this one (my upstairs machine, the Acer) goes Boom. Which... it may be fixin' to do. Been acting a little squirrelly. Heck I might start using that other one, anyway- it doesn't use as much electricity as this one.
Another neato thing about Mint- well, I guess many Linux distros generally- it wouldn't be the first time I've pulled the disc out of a crapped machine and just thown it in another one, as long as you're running the default video drivers, anyway- and just take up where you left off. Windoze isn't so forgiving, is it?
The Emachine is a EL1360 I think. It... wasn't too bad with the original Windows 7 installed, but after being bumped up to 8.1 it really bogged down. It has a... AMD E-300 in it, a dual-core APU with I think integrated HD 6310 video, that kicks over a screaming 1.3 GHz or so. Yeah it's not going to win any races.
Somewhere... I should have a low-profile bracket for an HD6450 card I have, and if I can find that, I might see how it is with that taking over the onboard graphics. Assuming the power supply can keep up with even that, ha, but yeah it's the poster child of Wally World not-very expandable. I think it's like what's that form-factor under ATX? Mini case with the DVD mounted vertically, takes low-profile cards has one x1 & one x16 slot. The CPU is soldered onto the MB so there's no changing it out. Eh if I get tired of my old Acer I might use it for a while. I'm flighty like that.
