Moved to Linux after using windows for over 23 years

Post by Blankman »

Hi everyone, it's great to be here and see how wonderful the community is. Thank you for being so welcoming. I've been on the forums for 11 days now but never introduced myself.

I have come from windows, I've used all the windows from the very beginning. This year I decided to make the move to Linux. I played with Linux a lot and realized that you can do most things on Linux that you can do on windows but not everything. So I decided to make the move and put Linux on all my computers. After playing with 4 different distros i settled on Mint.

It's been a huge learning curve, i have to google almost every single thing I want to do but it's been so much fun learning my way around. Right now I'm learning about bash scripts so I can reinstall all the programs onto a computer when i mess up. Time machine might be faster for this but I still need to play around and make my own mistakes.

I'm so happy to be here and thank you. One of my posts here asks people why they moved to Linux and what their story is. Have a look ->What made you choose Linux over any other operating system?

Same background here, I started with the Motorola 6800 cpu and writing binary code with a Hexadecimal keypad, a real pain, 256 bytes of RAM was huge then.

Tandy keyboard and 300 baud tape recorder to save stuff?
ugh,
Apple IIe
i286
and so forth.

found LM 17 Cinnamon and was hooked, took a year to finally get away from Windows, I sitll have the old Win7 Desktop spinning in my office, but I only use Mint on my laptops, which are my daily drivers now.

19.3 and 20.2
used LMDE4 for a while, just didn't learn to love it.

thank you . I'm sure i won't have any regrets other than trying to find alternatives to windows programs. I'm using wine for those apps that don't have linux alternatives but now i read that to be very secure we shouldn't use wine, so i don't know now.

Thank you for offering , yes I probably will need help. is bash script the only way to go? I hear python used to work in mint 19 but not 20? I was hoping to try learn to make python scripts?

Thanks for explaining , that's a great journey you had. I've completely moved my computer and laptop to linux, only thing is that my work computers still use windows so I'm not completely away from windows. I can understand it took a while to move away from windows. I tried mint once or twice years before finally making the move

hey Blankman and welcome to an OS that actually respects your privacy :D

The ONLY real thing I can think of off hand I wish the Mint team would or could implement in the next major version of Mint or even 20.3 is a built in gui setting to adjust mouse scroll wheel speed *shrugs*

But here's an easy enough alternative ( this primarily affects scroll wheel speed results in internet browsers though)

https://io.bikegremlin.com/11541/linux- ... oll-speed/ I have mine set to somewhere between 5 and 7 ( forgot which ..Haven't needed to touch it in ages)

Other than that, I moved to LM 20 in late July 2020 and couldn't be happier. Yes..it is an odd world to slowly but surely wrap your brain around, but SOOOOO worth the effort to learn how things work. You'll find many experienced Linux users here how often are on top of trying to help out others like white on rice, black on chocolate, and red on salsa

All41 on here just recently ( although that user was specifically helping another) accidentally reminded me of a easy solid way to launch a Nemo folder and make it automatically appear in the size I wanted AND the exact screen position I wanted too as a single command. Currently I've been using a nemobashscript to auto launch 4 different nemo folders at the same time basically and auto snap them to the four corners of my screen upon system bootup.

I've yacked enough for one window's message, but if you're interested in that, let me know. Cheers.

Blankman, a most brilliant choice in selecting Linux.

The difference between Doze and Linux is, the former uses the drive up
and the latter enters the store. Bot verse intelligent life.
