Newbe from Arizona

Post by showmad »

Hi all new to Linux and I have installed Linux cinnamon mint 20.3 on two older laptops I have and so far think it is a very nice program. I'm in my 70s so didn't get into computers until the early 1990s. Tired of the limitations and BS from HP, Bill Gates and microsoft and the regular commercialism of TV and the internet. I would like to thank all of the Linux community for all the hard work it took to get to this free and friendly operating system for computers. This is what I think IBM had in mind when they blessed us with the desk top computer before Windows hijacked a big chunk of that internet access back in the 1990s.

I did play a little bit with Linux 18 back a couple of years ago so think the 20.3 version out now is a great improvment. I usually hold on to my laptops the last 8 years since so much personal info can be stored on their HD. They are no longer user friendly so I go new at least every 2 years with laptops. You can't even swap out Ram, HD and battery anymore. I'm a Vietnam Vet have had 3 years college and 2 year AGS retired Tech, engineer and supervisor from what is Honeywell aerospace these days. Thanks again for all the hard work to create these Linux programs for all mankind.

I just want to ask if you've heard of the Framework laptop? That may be something exactly up your ally: Not mentioned on their website is that even Louis Rossmann uses one, a large part being because they're seemingly the only laptop company that provides board schematics to repair shops.

...that being said, as a fellow relative beginner to Linux Mint, I'd probably not advise any Mint users to purchase a Framework laptop before Mint 21.0 releases presumably before the end of summer since the Framework laptop generally requires a kernel version that is newer than what Mint 20.3 ships with, and Mint 21.0 will definitely ship with a kernel that is new enough (yes there's always the "Edge" version of Mint 20.3, but it was my impression that it's not quite as guaranteed in terms of stability or avoiding funky happenings or the like).
