Hello! From a Windows user who converted to Linux Mint.

Post by saleesh4u »

Hi All,

Even though I have been using LM and this forum for the past 2 years, this is my first post.
I started using a PC (Windows) in the year 2000.
Ever since then I was keen to use Linux and every couple of years I used to try installing the most popular distro of that time.
But, soon I would get fatigued with its usage and remove it after a few days of trying.
Even Ubuntu could not keep me from crawling back to Windows.
Then in 2020, I tried Linux Mint and for the first time, Linux stuck with me.
Now, in my dual-boot laptop, 90% of the time I boot into Linux Mint.
I boot into Windows 11 only for use of certain MS programs that are not fully supported in Linux.
Thanks to the makers of Linux Mint and this wonderful community!

Thanks & Regards,
Saleesh, Kerala, India

Hi, congratulations on leaving expensive, locked down and hidden Windows for Linux choice and freedom.
I've been using Linux for over 15 years. I dual booted at first too, but then I found the software I needed on Linux and figured out the only time I went on Windows was to update the virus and malware software. At that time I became a total Linux user, no more Windows! I am also a GUI guy, so you don't need to be a geek to use Linux no matter what the trolls say.

Hello Saleesh,

Welcome to the Linux Mint Forum!

Surely in Linux Mint you will find free programs that will replace those of MS very well.

Regards.

Your next step is to dump dual boot and run win in a VM :D

Hehe.. Andy made a reasonable point

Now my point is...that usually dualbooting ( as in having windows and linux living in the same physical drive) presents a rabbit hole of possible problems and isn't worth the migraine it can create.

However, as a reasonable happy medium, I have my mother's PC set up to where one drive has windows 10 and the other has Linux Mint 20.3. I ensured that I installed LM while her windows drive was not connected. Now when she needs to boot into windows, she just hits an Fkey for the quick boot menu. She's been doing this for over a year. Little by little she's trying to wing herself off of her dependency of windows.

Saleesh congrats on your journey to a mintier..fresher world.

Boot mint, open a terminal and sudo update-grub, it should find win and next time you boot you should get a grub menu giving you the choice of mint or win.

Welcome and congratulations on using Linux. I to dual booted, but only for a short time, when I figured out that the only time I used Windows was when I updated the virus and malware software on it. That is when you experience real computer freedom.
