The LMDE installer will be improved when there's time for it at the development team. At the moment, there is a new LMDE version coming with probably an improved installer.

The problem is that with a six month release cycle on the main edition there will always be a new release in the works.
This is why Ubuntu does not fix bugs either, too busy getting the next one out.
It is unfortunate but LMDE seems an afterthought.

Hardly an after thought. This is the first release on this base with a very small dev team. It appears that Boo is moving KMint to the LMDE base so now the dev team and tester teams have become larger.
