Celena DVD Cover and CD label

Postby tulu » Tue Oct 09, 2007 2:23 pm

Hi, I'm new to Linux Mint. I was investigating the new Linux distros starting from Ubuntu and found this one. I just love it. It's beautiful and great. Thats why i decided to make some covers for my copy. I'm no art designer, but i think this are pretty good. Any suggestions are accepted. What i really made was the mint leaf. The cover is based in one that i made for Kubuntu and that one was based in one that someone made for Ubuntu. Hehe, sorry for my English. En serio, perdón. Espero disfruten. Enjoy!

Here are the source files so you can edit the covers to suit your version of Linux Mint:
LinuxMintCovers.zip

The font used in the version name is one that was posted in this forum.

Very professional looking - like it :). The only criticisms I have are that the font at the back of the black CD slip doesn't stand out too much from the background... Perhaps it could be a lighter colour? And on the black CD image the "You are encouraged" text looks too light. But apart from that, it's pretty much perfect .

Thanks for the comments. I'll change the colors for more contrast with the text. The only thing is that the images are darker than the real svg work. Maybe thats the problem, but I'll adjust them. If you want you can also edit them downloading the source files in my first post. Thanks again for the support.

These are fantastic. Can we get On-Disk to use the CD artwork? (Personal preference for the black one...)

You can ask them (I think it's an option when you order). By default they're using our background and I'm quite happy with that, also they add a little on-disk logo on the CD which I find fair for the service they provide.

That's fair enough. I got 3.0 from On-Disk and was delighted with their service.

Hi, thanks again for the comments and the blog posting of the images. I just wanted to tell that I printed them... obviously the black "pack", and this are my conclusions:

DVD Cover:
* In the back, it's all readable except for the part "You are encouraged..." the font color it's too light. The suggestion is maybe to use a black or gray outline, or just use a darker green.
CD Label:
* Same as above, and also the "System requirements" title is too light.

I don't have a laser printer so maybe the colors are better printing that way.
When I have time I'll update the black cover and label (the poll says it's the favorite :D) and also I'll made the ones for all the Linux Mint versions.

What kind of DVD cases do you use? regular? slim? superslim?
I have a slim one so i had to adjust the center of the DVD Cover.

Bye for now.

Re: Celena DVD Cover and CD label - Darnya?

Postby Travicane » Wed Dec 05, 2007 3:57 am

Hi

Great artwork for Celena, particularly the gray scale with varieties of green.

Have you, or any of the other posters to this thread updated this for Daryna?

I always make a CD Label for ISO burns. Much better than scrawled, blurred scribblings on disk, and less likely to damage the disk.

I made my own primitive label for Daryna, before discovering this artwork. I planned to pass this disk along to my son after installing Darnya (still need it
to do re-install after some video driver problems)

I downloaded the zip for the labels, but some of the file extensions are not currently supported on the Windows side on my computer. Need to to look into update or fix.

Suggestions for added info:
* Some Ubuntu CD labels include a "Pass It On" logo that encourages people who have burned the ISO file to to make additional Live DIsks and
pass these on to friends - seems like a great idea!
* I know a number of people who would never take the trouble (or learn to) download and burn an ISO, but would gladly try a "Linux Mint" free Live CD if
I gave it to them and recommended that they try it.
* The CD has to look attractive and professional!
* A number of these people could likely copy a physical CD

I think this kind of "SneakerNet Viral Marketing" has proven useful for the Ubuntu Distros. It might prove very useful to a Distro like Linux Mint to help
establish a critical mass and footprint.

PS: Please excuse the lack of formatting. I am working in Firefox, and none of the formatting buttons at the top of the entry screen work to do anything.

Hi, thanks for the complements.

I'll update the covers, i just didn't have time with my job and all that :D

The content in the zip file are PNGs and SVGs. The SVG files I think that are the standard files for vectorial graphic. In windows you can open them with Inkscape. Also i think that Corel or Illustrator should open them.

Ill post again with the new cover!

Salute!

Hi and thank you
i look forward to seeing the result.

Also, thank you for the input on programs/tools to deal with svg files.
I had not run across Inkscape before. It seems pretty neat. i downloaded it and used it to open your CD Labels.
I was able to use it to make useful edits after playing around with the UI for 5-10 minutes. That is pretty impressive. A Keeper!

i think your explicit "Pass it on Message" is much better than my Icon suggestion. As one of the posters above noted, i could not really read it properly in the original color. When i changed the color to the darkest green on the Inkscape color bar, ( in the segment that was closest to the Linux Mint colors), it was legible and looked OK.

I have no idea how to edit the "Celena" Name Tag to read "Daryna"
For my own use t hink I will figure out a reasonable place to put text fields for the actual release number and burn date

Salute!
