No internet connection in LMDE, please help!

Post by germanix »

I installed LMDE as a dual boot with Mint 10. The network manager sees all of the SSID`s of the neighbors but not my own router. (Mint 10 works fine). I tried the option to "connect to hidden wireless network" and here funny enough it does see my repeater but not my router. I am sitting next to the router and the repeater is one floor below. I cannot however connect to the repeater. I do enter the WPA & WPA2 personal Password but it just searches but will not connect. I also tried entering the name of my router and entered the password but no connection takes place. All other computers in the house connect without problems.
My ethernet controller is a Atheros AR5001X and my router is the FRITZ!Box 7270.
Will much appreciate help in solving this problem. Thanks.

inxi -F, with a capital "F". No big deal though, lspci has already clearly indicated your wifi card is an Atheros AR5001 card. It should already work though...

Are you using ndiswrapper? Also, could you please post the output of:

You don't seem to have any conflicting modules loaded...that's weird, I don't see any reason why your Atheros card isn't working. The Debian wiki page devoted to ath5k doesn't seem to give any other useful advice either (http://wiki.debian.org/ath5k). According to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD ... er/Atheros though, this might be applicable for you:
Additional step for kernel 2.6.32.22 and later
Kernel 2.6.32.22 changed the default for the rfkill parameter of ath_pci from 0 to 1, which had the effect of killing the methods described above. You'll need to make sure that it's set back to 0 on system startup. To do that, edit (or create) the file /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf to include the line

options ath_pci rfkill=0
Your wireless should work after you reboot.
Give that a try and see if it works.

Also, in the future, please post the output of terminal commands inside brackets.

(Solved) No internet connection in LMDE, please help!

Post by germanix »

Thank you for your help. What you suggested did not work but it was worth the try. This is obviously a deal breaker for me so I decided to remove LMDE from my system and just work with Julia from now on. With Julia everything works out of the box and it is a great distro.
Thank you for all those who assisted and have a nice day.

This is a consolekit bug
Install an older version from squeeze repository

I just installed Squeeze on a laptop with an AR5001 today. The system enabled it and it was odd that I was online but network manager was not managing the connection. Nothing seemed to be. Can't explain it. But, the fix was to install Wicd. It managed it fine and all is well. I know you removed LMDE by now but if you get the urge, give it a go.
