Solved: I only have a 700Mb CDswould like to try Debian

Postby domdog » Mon Feb 14, 2011 11:08 pm

I only have 700MB CDs and no DVD Burner. I can't see any way to boot from 4G stick...

I'm a beginner and I dislike the simple answers not working....please explain this why this problem exists (ie 8?? MB OS).

Frustrated at the start :(

Kurt

external dvd writer $40.00
pack of dvd/r $15.00
Linux Mint Priceless.

So if you can afford it. that aint a bad route to take. However i do believe there is a way to create a bootable usb image of debian.

Or try another popular distro like:

#!Crunchbang/Linux ... based on Debian Squeeze in either Xfce or Openbox version.

Crunchbang is very 'stable' fast and lightweight . . . and is only about 650 Mb total
Crunchbang, also, has a great forum . . . and some extremely informative Wiki pages.

CrunchBang is a Debian GNU/Linux based distribution offering a great blend of speed, style and substance. Using the light Xfce desktop environment or the nimble Openbox window manager, it is highly customisable and provides a modern, full-featured GNU/Linux system without sacrificing performance.

Crunchbang may not be the best choice for newbies or anyone valuing a stable system. From the CB site:

Disclaimer
CrunchBang Linux is not recommended for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. CrunchBang Linux could possibly make your computer go CRUNCH! BANG! Therefore CrunchBang Linux comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by applicable law.

But the disclaimer is really a joke which started when CrunchBang was based on Ubuntu.

You could install Debian from a CD then change your sources list to LMDE.
Get Dropbox and an extra 250 mb http://db.tt/wAizqw0

Yes...that was said "tongue in cheek" (in other words, it's a joke)... :)

Crunchbang is based on Debian Squeeze and NOT on 'testing' . . . which makes Crunchbang very 'stable'

And, yes . . . the Disclaimer is/was a 'joke' . . . a slight 'tongue in cheek' thing by the #! Dev.

I would recommend Crunchbang to any Linux newbie ... just go with the Xfce desktop Easier to Learn and Use.

Thanks every one for the Replies,

I used the howtogeek.com link and set up a bootable memory stick to try out the OS. It was fun and worked great at what it did.

I downloaded Debian-gnome-i386 and used another computer to make a DVD. I installed in last night and things seem to be working well.

Once again, I appreciate all the info.
