How to get to the other desktop [SOLVED]

Post by JerryC58 » Sat Aug 03, 2019 8:36 pm

I upgraded to Mint 19.2 Cinnamon today. Thought I would like to try the MATE environment, so I installed it using "sudo apt install mint-meta-mate". It appeared to do a clean install. I rebooted and ended up in Cinnamon. How do I get it to boot into Mate?

At the login screen, click the icon next to your name (or login). You should be presented with options as to which DE you want.
Mint 19.2 XFCE
kernel 4.15.0-62-generic
AMD FX-8350 Eight-Core w/16 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 960 w/2GB RAM (435.21)

If you have autologin, log out; then somewhere on the login window there's a desktop selector. Select mate and login.
IIRC, it will boot to the last desktop/session you choose....or there's also $HOME/.dmrc with the default(?) session.
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?
Mint 19.1 Xfce/fluxbox
Manjaro openbox/fluxbox

That's what I thought too, but I don't have a login screen. How do I get one of those?

Try going to Menu and select Logout, then try logging back in and see if you are presented with the choices shown above in this thread. Did you set up mint to login with a password? I don't know for sure, maybe it won't work unless you have to use a password to log in.

I tried to have two DE's on Ubuntu 16 32 bit (I think) a couple of years ago and had nothing but problems. It acted like one DE was interfering with the other no matter which one I chose. So I went back to the DE that came with Ubuntu 16 via Timeshift. Haven't tried it since. Now I'm on Mint 19.1 Mate and I'm not touching it as far as changes or additions are concerned except for regular updates.
Good Luck.
