For example, virtualbox and KeePassX (see screenshot).

It looks a bit like the Windows 98 era. On Ubuntu I did not have this problem (well, maybe one application at 100). On Xubuntu quite often (eg Rhythmbox). From what I read then, it is a difference between the version of the GTK in desktop environment (version 2 or 3) and GTK version of which was written for a particular application. And now I do not know if it MATE uses old GTK or virtualbox. I pointed this out when I watch the youtube announcement for linux mint 14, dude just fired virtualbox'a and had a proper skinning. Although he use Cinamon and I MATE.

Hence my questions:
1. Is the Cinamon environment uses a newer version of GTK, or simply in mint 14 GTK is updated for MATE and Cinamon
2. If Cinamon environment is "modern" then is some major difference in the performance and responsiveness compared to MATE? I'm using MATE, because I have a hybrid card and every day I work on the feeble intel that Unity was able to warm up, but MATE is doing well.

Seems that VirtualBox and Keepassx are written on QT, so maybe it is not GTK problem but QT?

Regards

Install qt4-qtconfig, run qtconfig and set GUI Style to GTK+.
