Power Manager Notifications

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the correct forum, but this was my best guess, so here goes.

Basically, I'm having problems getting pop-up notifications from the power manager (whatever one it is that's included with MATE by default). All of my notifications from other programs all show up in the proper location in the upper right hand corner off the screen, but notifications from the power manager show up in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, and so far down that all of the text is off the screen and I cannot read them. I just have to assume that they are from the power manager because their upper left-hand corners line up with my battery icon, and I have one pop up when I unplug my laptop or the battery is low.

I would really like to get these in the upper right-hand corner of my screen with the rest of my notifications, so I can read them when they pop up. Does anyone know of a way to accomplish this? I tried doing a search about it, but the results I got were irrelevant to my situation. As a first guess, I tried to drag the notification up with my mouse the last time it appeared, but that didn't accomplish anything.

No help, huh? Well, thanks anyway.

Well, I don't run mate (or even mint for that matter) but you might want to look at the power manager settings and see if there are controls for the notifications there.

It might be a dead end, but I would try doing some google searches to see where the config files are located for the program that handles notifications. The thing about config files is that they're usually easier to read than you expect, and there might be a trick in there.

Either way, it's also possible that it's a mate bug, in which case the mate forums might be a good place to go.

Best of luck. :)

That setting is currently set to top right, which is where I want everything to appear. Power manager notifications seem to be ignoring that setting.

But I'll try changing it to see if it does anything.

...

Nope, power manager notifications are still off the screen, in the same position as before (bottom right), where I can't read them. Other notifications are now also in the bottom right, but are not off-screen.

Pretty sure this is a bug, but I have no idea how I would go about reporting it. Any suggestions? Where are the MATE forums that were mentioned above?

Thanks!

I forgot about this for a little while, or I probably would have searched myself. It turns out, it isn't just power manager that does this! Banshee also puts notifications off the bottom of the screen where they're unreadable! I'll check out those forums, though.

I'm not sure if my registration went through on there. Guess I'll have to wait a little while and see if I get the activation e-mail. I noticed someone else posted on those forums that's having the same issue as me, though, so at least now I know I'm not the only one this issue concerns. That thread hasn't got any responses yet, though.

Well, I did manage to get registered to the Github site (from the pinned link in this forum), and reported the issue there. Hopefully someone can figure this out.

Hmm, nobody has responded to my bug report, and I never got the confirmation e-mail from the MATE forums, so I guess I'm stuck.

Funny, the power manager did display one notification in the proper area the other day, telling me my battery has less than 50% of its original capacity remaining. All the other power notifications are still off screen, though. Oh, notificaitons from Banshee are off screen as well.

I've further identified the problem: Anything that tries to pop up a notification through Notification Area displays this behavior. What's happening is that the notifications show up with their upper left-hand corners attached to their respective icons. Anyone have any ideas now?

You could check in menu>system tools>Configuration editor>apps>mate-notification-daemon and see if bottom right is displayed. You could also open an terminal and type:

Code: Select all

mate-panel --reset
This will reset your panel to default settings. Hopefully that will help.

I'm having the same issue.

The Configuration Editor lists the desired location (top_right) for notifications under mate_notification_daemon. Changing this has no effect on power manager/notification area applet notifications.

Also,

Code: Select all

mate-panel --reset
resets the panel, but has no effect on notifications.

I've tried tweaking settings under panel in the Configuration Editor, but no luck there either; can't find anything related to notification positioning

I'm having the same problem. Power manager notifications are hidden below the bottom right of the screen, with only the top part of the notification visible.

EDIT: I've narrowed the issue down to the way the Coco theme interacts with Mint and have discovered a work-around. To display these hidden notifications, you can <alt-f2> to mateconf-editor, and switch the theme under `mate-notification-engine` from `coco` to `standard`. There are other themes available (see the themes directory in this repo), but `standard` seemed to match the Mint style the best. But I definitely prefer the original Coco theme the best. Note that this will change the theme of all of your notifications, not just the ones affected by the bug. I've noted this information in the bug report jmetal88 filed on mate-notification-engine's github repo.

If I get time, I'll dive into the Coco theme to try and fix the problem.

Thanks, Scott! Changing the theme does, indeed, put those notifications back on the screen. They're still not with the other notifications, but since they now pop upwards from the icons instead of down from the icons, I can read them!

This issue still affects Mint 15 (Mate 1.6).

Updated workaround attached to the bug report on github: https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-no ... /issues/11
