Some themes won't let you set the panel color even though you have set it to use an image. You will have to find a theme that doesn't dictate the panel background. Go to http://www.linuxmint-art.org/ and shop around. Unfortunately, most themes won't tell you if this is the case. I know the blubuntu and slickness themes will let switch panel backgrounds.

If you go back to gnome-look.org where you downloaded the slickness theme, there is a fix for the Firefox bug.

I had the same problem, panels right and left looked awkful. So I simply chossed a already installed theme : aurora and got another wallpaper while I am in that setup.
So, now I am very pleased with my Desktop.
I think for widescreen displays its the best solution to use two panels right an left. the firefox has enough room, then. :)
