No panels in Mint 16

Postby bigstape » Sun Feb 16, 2014 1:43 pm

I've done a fresh install of Linux Mint 16 MATE edition on a Lenovo ThinkPad T500, and the upper and lower panels do not appear in MATE. Needless to say, this makes MATE rather difficult to use. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make them appear?

The default Mint Mate does not have a top panel, only a bottom panel.

If you have no bottom panel you can press alt F2 or open a terminal (right click desktop choose open terminal) and copy and paste this into it.

Code: Select all

sudo mate-panel --reset

either the source file you used to install Mint (DVD or usb) was corrupted or for some reason the panel was not installed along with the rest of system. You can open a terminal and copy and paste this into it to see if the panel was installed:

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy mate-panel

Found the problem. The screen resolution setting was odd so the panel was off the screen. Thanks for your help.

For anyone with the same problem, the console command for the control panel to change screen resolutions is "mate-display-properties".

This problem continues to annoy me, even after updating to Mint 17. Now it is necessary to turn off the second monitor that appears in mate-display-properties (even though I only have one monitor) in order to get the panel to appear.
