MintMenu Origin

Post by JAK »

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but here is my question anyway:

Is MintMenu a new menu system written from scratch or is it borrowed from another distro? I know it's very SuSE looking but it works differently than the SuSE menu-- better than SuSE.

SUSE made Slab. S.Chanderbally liked it and wrote the Ubuntu System Panel (an attempt to make a similar menu for Ubuntu)... or "USP".

USP was great but not stable enough, too Ubuntu-specific and full of features we didn't need, so it was forked and adapted and the result is mintMenu. Most of the bugs found in mintMenu were also found in USP so the two programs are evolving in parallel.

Here are the sub-forums for mintMenu and USP:

Thanks for that info. I like the idea of having everything "right there", not hunting around from fly-out to fly-out looking for stuff. I also like the "Favourites" menu to just display the most commonly used items. I also appreciate the search function to find those applications when you're not sure what category they're in.

I have been using PCLinuxOS (best KDE) for a few months having tried nearly every popular distro out there. I have generally found the KDE desktop to be more fun to use. One day I gave Bianca a try and was absolutely amazed..... extremely impressed. I never though gnome could look so good. While I do find Gnome to be quite a bit lacking in configurabilty, I could easily make Mint my main desktop. It's very professional looking and easy to use.

If you do decide to make a KDE version of Mint, don't drop any of the current features, especially the MintMenu.

Well we can't port mintApplications to KDE (there's more work involved than allowed by our release schedule) but the KDE Edition will come with a third party product called Tasty Menu, which is really cool too.

Maybe in time it can be ported over. I just looked up that Tasty Menu. It does look pretty cool so long as there aren't multiple fly-outs or sub-menus.

Thanks.
