Black screen with mouse cursor after grub boot-up

Post by Thorium »

Hello everybody,

I hope this is the good place for my issue.

2 days ago, I was browsing then my laptop frezze. I had to push the on/off button to switch it off. Then when I started it again, I had the "famous" black screen with only the mouse cursor visible.
Yesterday I spent the full day to try to fix it, unsuccessfully.

Laptop is HP nx7300, 4MB Ram, x86_64, kernel 3.11.0-12-generic,
*-display:0
description: VGA compatible controller
product: Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller
vendor: Intel Corporation

I can access the terminal or ssh it. I tried to change GRUB (nomodeset, i945.modeset=0) and other things I found on Internet.
I tried to upgrade with the CLI as I am on Mint16. Everyting seems to be good, it spent about 2 hours to install but it didn't switch to 17 and this didn't fix the issue.
I still have the black screen and I don't know what version I have now...

I am hoping someone could help me to get it back working without a full reinstall.
I can provide any log or further info, just tel me the command.

Many thanks

Re: Black screen with mouse cursor after grub boot-up

Post by MrBob22 »

Hello:
Looks like your video module failed to load, but I cannot tell why not. Did you make a live disk, and can you try to boot with that? The live disk should have a generic video driver that would work ( I hope!). I dont quite understand why you had video driver that worked one day but not the next. Did you change something related to your video recently? Good luck, MrBob22

Yes I think this is a video issue, it's why I posted the log.
I have a USB stick with Mint 16 working fine.
I don't understand why I have this issue as I didn't change anything on the video, strange.

So what can I do?
