Computer VERY slow/laggy after updates

Post by Erik765 »

Hi all,

After doing updates yesterday, I noticed my computer became very slow and laggy. I'm using Mint Mate 17.1 with Compiz enabled, and it's always worked like a dream (until now). I'll be using it, and I'll notice my mouse become really choppy, or stop moving completely, and whenever using any compiz effects at all, it's terrible (maybe 1-2 fps).

I've reinstalled the fglrx driver (as well as tried the non-proprietary, but that wouldn't even start x).

Nothing else has changed on my system, but I have no way of knowing how to figure out which update may have caused it. Killing conky and evrouter doesn't seem to make a difference (but it never did before either).

One thing I do notice is the migration/* processes reporting high cpu usage, when moving windows, etc. Not sure I've ever seen this before, and the X process seems to be working pretty hard too.

I even notice notification sounds from apps, etc are choppy from time to time. Just a general lag whenever anything graphical is requested from the system.

Here is a list of what was updated:

I hope someone can provide some insight. This is my work PC and re-installing isn't really an option (due to the complications with grub/dual boot/raid array/vpn/ssh keys, etc).

Let me know if you need any more info.

I'm pulling my hair out :(

Thanks in advance.

It is still very laggy while using Marco instead of Compiz. In fact it uses twice as much CPU power to move windows around, than it does in compiz.

While dragging windows around all over the screen, quickly-

With Marco, I see xorg at about 20% and other kworker*:* processes next in line.

With Compiz, I see xorg at about 8% and other migration/* processes next in line.

I'd also like to point out that this seems to have affected all user profiles on this machine as well.

Thanks again for your help.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- launch a terminal window and make it fullscreen, to avoid chopped lines;
- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
if you type: the letter F is a capital letter

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

With this new hardware, I'd try the latest kernel within the 3.16 series. This might improve performance (newer drivers).

Yeah, I gotta do something.

Just don't know what caused it.

I just had Libre Writer open and I can't even move my cursor over the page without migration processes running at 40% of my cpu and my mouse lagging like crazy.

I'll update the kernel and consequently reinstall the gpu driver later on tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks so much for your help this far :)

Another thing that strikes me as unhealthy about your system: the root partition is 82 % filled. This might decrease performance as well. As a rule of thumb, Linux performs best when at least 20-25 % of each system partition is free.

Furthermore, there's an SSD. This is how to optimize an SSD for Linux Mint:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/ssd

I'd pay particular attention to TRIM. The default schedule is a pitiful inadequate weekly....

So, I've successfully installed the latest 3.16 kernel

Code: Select all

$ uname -a

But, still the same result.

Should I even bother with trying 3.19.2?

Here is an easier-to-read list of the updates as well-

Anything stand out?

Thanks again for the help.

OK, please do this:
- boot your computer from the Mint DVD (live session);
- launch GParted;
- make screenshots of GParted, one for each hard disk;
- post those two screenshots here, for examply by means of Postimage:

Hello there,

Here is the screenshot you requested:
http://eriksplace.com/shared/Screenshot.png

I'm curious as to why this issue may be related to my SSDs, however! ;)

I've been skimming over my xorg config, as well as the outputs of inxi -Fxz and lspci | grep VGA

I wish I could just get the intel graphics to disable completely in my bios, 'cause I'm wondering if maybe, for some reason, it's trying to use that instead of my AMD cards. Or is there a way to disable this within Linux, that you're aware of?

Here is some output:

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Fxz | grep -A 2 Graphics
Graphics: Card-1: Intel Xeon E3-1200 v2/3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller bus-ID: 00:02.0
           Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Tahiti XT [Radeon HD 7970/8970 OEM / R9 280X] bus-ID: 01:00.0
           Card-3: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Tahiti XT [Radeon HD 7970/8970 OEM / R9 280X] bus-ID: 02:00.0
and:

Code: Select all

$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v2/3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Tahiti XT [Radeon HD 7970/8970 OEM / R9 280X]
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Tahiti XT [Radeon HD 7970/8970 OEM / R9 280X]
both cite my AMD cards as on interface 01:00.0 and 02:00.0 (although Crossfire is disabled, so 02:00.0 is technically not even being used).

Here is the output of my xorg.conf file:

Code: Select all

Do you think it specifying

Code: Select all

BusID       "PCI:1@0:0:0"
and

Code: Select all

BusID       "PCI:2@0:0:0"
is an issue? Or is that just a different syntax for saying

Code: Select all

01:00.0
and

Code: Select all

02:00.0
?

I'll also point out that at this point I've tried completely wiping out my xorg.conf file and starting from scratch. No change.

Thanks again for all the help so far.

OK, this strikes me as odd and unusual: why have you chosen an LVM installation instead of ordinary partitions?

It's not LVM:

At least from what I can tell.

Any idea why my graphics are laggy after doing updates last week? Whenever my system calls for any graphics, it lags my system.

Through out the AMD card.
Reboot. All good with the Intel?
Consider to stick with that.

Alternatively test to through in the AMD again
and see if the drivers can get it right this time..
Locked

Return to “MATE”
