Extreme slowness at startup of Mate menu

Post by GiuTor » Wed Dec 23, 2015 3:19 pm

Hi,

after logging in and pressing the menu icon on the bottom left corner several seconds pass by until the menu is displayed. The same happens if I click the Home icon in the desktop.

All of this happens only once as if something has to get cached. Is it possible to avoid this lagging?

Thanks
GiuTor

Exactly the same with me, although the menu occasionally beats the Update Manager icon - no idea why this happens.

Seeing it is just checking for updates for about 5 seconds I personally find no problem with it.

I don't have the mint update program in my autostart list so it isn't checking for updates on my netbook running Mate. And it takes just as long. So that's not true. It doesn't make much sense anyway. Why wait for that to check for updates anyway?

This ridiculously slow menu open is a long standing issue with mate, and very annoying.

okay I tried it with the mate update start up turned off and on
Found it a tad faster with it off.

Have you tried turning off unnecessary start up items. Just a thought.

Rob I yield to you few extra seconds does not bother me. Good luck.

Yes this has ALWAYS been a problem. I've had many new "converts" to Mint rightfully complaining about this.
This slowness is UNACCEPTABLE in a key piece of the desktop environment that you have to use pretty much constantly.
So is caja startup by the way. Too slow (on purpose it seems, just look at the /usr/bin/startcaja script).

I agree with others here - the issues of slow initial opening of Mate Menu and Caja (likely image/data caching?) are old, tired annoyances that really could stand to go away. Embarrassing when noticed by non-Linux folks peeking over my shoulder (whom I just may be trying to impress/convert at the time)! :?

I see no reason this caching couldn't simply happen during the boot process...!?! So it'll increase the bootup time a few seconds... so what! That's a period when a system isn't expected to be fully useable yet, and a few seconds extra there won't really matter... because it's expected. It's when it's not expected - like clicking on the menu button or file browser in the middle of a harried session - where this obnoxious trait really "shines". Ug!

A much too-obvious wart on what is otherwise the fast and fantastic Mate desktop. Needs to be addressed! :!:

This is the fix from Mint bugs Launchpad

Try this as the superuser (do "sudo bash" first to get a superuser prompt):

cd /usr/share/icons/ ; for d in * ; do [ -d $d ] && gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/$d ; done

works for me :) :D

Thanks I think this helped a lot, even in 18.1 menu seems to be working as it should, at least for now. Thanks a lot.
