Mint Mate 18 fresh install freezes frequently (SOLVED)

Post by narendra.d » Thu Jul 21, 2016 12:00 am

Hi

A freshly installed and updated Install of LinuxMint Mate 18 freezes unrecoverably often needing a hard reboot. The Asus X200MA laptop earlier had Mate 17 through 17.3 working perfectly. Mostly a webrowser or a video if open when this happens, though a few times it has happened without either too.
Other than opera browser, no other packages outside of the default repos are installed. Opera was the default version from the Opera website. Chromium is the other browser installed if it matters.

Did find a thread on this and tried clearing the /tmp and /home/.cache folders as advised, but it didn't work.

System info and syslog if it helps.

I am not new to Linux, but can follow instructions on use of the command line. Any advice on where to look for possible issues.

Any help in resolving this is appreciated.
Thank you.

Narendra

See this bug report for details 8086:0f31 Xubuntu freeze once a day, affects Intel Corporation Atom Processor
Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series Graphics & Display [8086:0f31] for quite some time.

Many users but not all could run without freezes using kernel boot option intel_idle.max_cstate=1. To test, upon reboot edit first grub menu entry and append intel_idle.max_cstate=1 to quiet splash parameters.

Hi

Thank you for your response. And apologies for the delay.

Actually I had given up on finding a resolution or even a cause. In the hope that some other distribution might not have this issue, I had installed Lubuntu a few days ago, but the problem repeated itself here too.
The freeze happens only when a browser is open and doesn't matter which one. I have Opera, Firefox and Chromium. I am going to see if your resolution works and update this thread.
Just to add, my system has Intel Celeron N2930 processor.

Thank you once again for your reply.

Narendra

Hi

Thank You. Figured the Processor is a Bay Trail one.
Reinstalled Linux Mint 18 Mate along with your suggestion, working so far for a day. So far so good. Will update if there is a problem.

Until then probably this issue is SOLVED and the Solution you provided WORKS. Thank you once gain.

Since it works for you, you can make the change permanent, so that you don't have to access the Grub menu every time.
It that what you are doing?
Open the /etc/default/grub file in your text editor, as root:

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/default/grub
Add intel_idle.max_cstate=1 to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line.
EXAMPLE:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="intel_idle.max_cstate=1"
(You might have "quiet splash" in there also - if you want it. I don't.)
Save the file. Exit the editor. Update Grub:

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
Linux Linx 2018
