Weather Applet (Weather Report 1.8.1) Dead?

Post by rcentros »

I'm using Linux Mint Mate 17.1 (32 bit) on my desktop. Weather Report (1.8.1) quit working sometime yesterday or today. Changing cities changes nothing. Does anyone know if it is currently down? -- or is this issue unique to me?

Owners of http://weather.noaa.gov shut down the service (a few hours ago it seems), so libmateweather has nowhere to get the weather data from. That means both Clock and Weather applets are unable to show anything. I'm currently testing http://aviationweather.gov as possible alternative. Seems to work here. I'll give it a bit more testing before committing the changes.

Also true for Linux Mint Mate 18 as of yesterday. Thank you for looking for a solution.

I have found the same information on forecast.weather.gov that formerly was on noaa.weather.gov

Dead for me too.

When testing please check that weather sources outside the USA work too.

Appx how long before the changes hit the repos?

It looks like http://aviationweather.gov gives the exact same information that http://weather.noaa.gov used to give. Of course, not being a developer, I have no idea how much work is involved in connecting to it.

Thanks for looking into this.

EDIT: It looks like aviationweather.gov redirects to http://forecast.weather.gov for local forecasts (where I get the same choices for location as I used to get) -- also part of NOAA. (But you probably knew that ... sorry.)

Hey Monsta, I'd be curious to know the details of this and if there's encrypted requests to noaa or weather.gov. I suspect "no" but really would encourage you to code in secure connections whenever possible. fwiw, here's the syslog if anyone's interested.

Code: Select all

MateWeather-CRITICAL **: weather_info_get_icon_name: assertion 'info != NULL' failed
MateWeather-CRITICAL **: weather_info_get_temp_summary: assertion 'info != NULL' failed
MateWeather-CRITICAL **: weather_info_get_icon_name: assertion 'info != NULL' failed
MateWeather-WARNING **: Failed to get IWIN forecast data: 404 Not Found
MateWeather-WARNING **: Failed to get METAR data: 404 Not Found.

I'm glad to see that this problem was the consequence of a defunct web site.

When I noticed that both the desktop and laptop were not showing the weather I thought the feature was eliminated for some reason.

Thanks Monsta for looking into this - looking forward to its return.

This is now fixed in Ubuntu Mate, so I'd guess it will make it to Mint soon

This hasn't been fixed in Ubuntu MATE regular 14.04 and 16.04 versions. There is a new package available if you add Xenial PPA for MATE 1.14.

I hope Linux Mint creates a package for libmateweather 1.8 because I am not sure Ubuntu MATE will. :(

Oh, okay. I think I'm using Mate 1.8 so (I'm guessing) the Xenial PPA wouldn't help out at all.

Correct. Linux Mint MATE 17.1 and Ubuntu MATE 14.04 both use the Trusty base and MATE 1.8. So we need libmateweather 1.8 for Trusty.

Linux Mint might be able to push this update faster because they don't need Stable Release Update approval from Cannonical. Ubuntu MATE doesn't need it for 14.04 either because it's not an official release, but so far nothing in the repos.

I feel a little sorry for the devs. Combine Trusty + Xenial + LMDE + MATE 1.8 + MATE 1.10 + MATE 1.12 + MATE 1.14 + x86 + x64 and the number of new packages required is not insignificant...

On Linux Mint Mate 17.1 it returns "Desktop: N/A" ? I had tried inxi -F earlier. My "last resort" is to just go to Synaptic and search for "mate" -- but it seems like there was another command to give information about the Desktop. (I've got a good memory, but it's short.)

It's so much easier when you aren't the one doing it.

Thank you Developers.

Try the "system monitor" -> system tab

On earlier versions of inxi you get that result, but not with newer versions of inxi.
What version do you have?

~ $ inxi
CPU~Quad core AMD A8-3870 APU with Radeon HD Graphics (-MCP-) speed/max~1200/3000 MHz Kernel~4.5.0-040500-generic x86_64 Up~3 min Mem~1405.2/7476.8MB HDD~1620.3GB(13.1% used) Procs~218 Client~Shell inxi~2.3.0

The command to install the latest inxi is:

Code: Select all

sudo inxi -U
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
Linux Linx 2018
